The story takes place shortly before Iron Man's attack on the iron Monger suits of the Ten Rings terrorist organization. Tony Stark must rebuild his suit after being captured by terrorists, and find out who set him up. This new movie also has some amazing special effects that were done by Industrial Light & Magic, who won an Academy Award for their work on this film. The director and producers of the film focused on keeping the plot basic and easy to follow, rather than getting too high tech. Tony Stark has been captured by terrorists who want him to build a weapon for them. He builds his armored suit using scraps he finds in the wreckage of his escape pod, building a prototype Mark I armor. When he is finished, it is taken away from him by the terrorists to be loaded onto their truck. Stark realizes that they are secretly transporting it out of East Asia, so he uses his chestplate to open the truck's doors while it drives down a hill. The armor is destroyed when it falls into water. Gwyneth Paltrow (Iron Man 2) and Don Cheadle (James Rhodes/War Machine) both reprise their roles from the first film. Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) is appointed as the director of the Avenger Initiative. Robert Downey, Jr. (Tony Stark/Iron Man) returns as Tony Stark in this installment of the franchise. Terrence Howard (Howard Stark), Gwyneth Paltrow (Pepper Potts), and Don Cheadle (James 'Rhodey' Rhodes / War Machine / Harley Keener / Rocket Racer), all return after their prior roles in Iron Man.
